Yum! Brands, the parent company of popular fast-food chains including KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell, has confirmed that it was the victim of a ransomware attack on January 13, 2023. At the time of the attack, the company claimed that no customer data was stolen. However, Yum! Brands has now admitted that some individuals’ personal information was stolen during the breach. The information stolen includes names, driver’s license numbers, and other ID card numbers.

The company has started sending notification letters to affected individuals, offering complimentary monitoring and protection services. In the letters, Yum! Brands stated that it has not found any evidence that the stolen data has been used for identity theft or fraud. The company has not disclosed the total number of employees who were affected by the breach. However, the company has assured customers that their data was not compromised in the attack.

The January ransomware attack resulted in Yum! Brands having to shut down around 300 restaurants in the United Kingdom. The attack impacted certain IT systems, and as a result, certain systems were temporarily disrupted. In the company’s 2022 annual report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Yum! Brands disclosed that it has incurred expenses related to responding to, remediating, and investigating the matter. The company also disclosed that it does not expect the attack to have a material adverse impact on its business, operations, or financial results.

The Yum! Brands ransomware attack is just one of many high-profile data breaches to occur in recent years.
